Does it work? --> Confirmed.

When there's a fire, some objects that catch on fire will not become damaged. Two examples are the trash compactor and food. Even if they are on fire for a while, they will generally not burn down (unless the food is on a table), and they'll still be usable (and edible) after the fire.

Note: Works for later versions where you can go to other places (like downtown)
Does it work? --> Confirmed. It works.

Have at least two Sims in a home. Make one call up a cab to go Downtown, or probably any other trip that only needs one Sim from a family. As the Sim gets into a cab, make another Sim click on an object or an area so that an actions menu pops up. Now, choose a place for the first Sim to go. As the place loads (with the screen with a picture of a car), the actions menu will still be there!
